	Nebraska elects Sommerfeld

Delegates to the LCMS Nebraska District convention, June 5-7 in
Seward, elected a new president, Rev. Russell Sommerfeld, on the first
ballot.

Sommerfeld, 50, will be installed July 20 at Holy Cross Lutheran
Church, Kearny, where he is senior pastor. As district president, he
succeeds Rev. Eugene Gierke, who is completing his fourth three-year
term -- the maximum allowed under district bylaws.

A 1987 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Sommerfeld has
served Holy Cross since 1995 and has been the districts first vice
president since 1994.

Delegates elected to first terms Rev. Clint Poppe, of Lincoln,
first vice president, and Rev. North Sherrill, Kearney, second vice
president.

Re-elected to each others former offices were Rev. A. Norman
Friedmeyer, Plattsmouth, third vice president, and Rev. Roger Schepmann,
Beemer, fourth vice president.

Delegates adopted a resolution asking the LCMS Commission on
Theology and Church Relations to develop of study document clarifying
issues of unionism and syncretism. A whereas stated that there is
concern and confusion over [these] contemporary issues.

Another resolution encourages respect and trust for each
other.

In these turbulent times, the resolution says, synodical
officials, pastors, congregatioons, and individual Christians are often
called upon to make difficult decisions in complex and critical
situations. The resolution calls for such situations to be approached
with prayer, the study of Gods Word, the counsel of our brothers and
sisters in Christ, and the desire to act boldly and faithfully on behalf
of the Gospel of Jesus Christ both to the lost and to the saved.

Addressing differences, the resolution calls for following
scriptural, confessional, and constitutional guidelines before making
our disagreements public or bringing formal charges against each other,
and calls on district and circuit forums for dialog to study issues and
build trust among church workers and congregations under the Word of God
and the Lutheran Confessions.

The Nebraska delegates also passed a resolution commending Synod
President Gerald Kieschnick for his current One Message, One Mission,
One People emphasis.
