ABCUSA: Ineke Carman, Former Missionary in India, Dies

Wichers Carman, former American Baptist missionary in South India, died June
5 at age 70.

The American Baptist Foreign Mission Society appointed Ineke and her
husband, John, to serve in South India in 1957.  While there John assumed
various responsibilities at the newly formed Christian Institute for the
Study of Religion and Society in Bangalore and Ineke welcomed and hosted
visitors to the Institute.  She also served as warden at the Language School
in Bangalore, where new missionaries studied one or more of the four South
Indian languages. In that role she coordinated meals and the handled the
finances at the school, among other responsibilities. During their last year
in South India the Carmans served at the Ramapatnam Baptist Theological
Seminary in Andhra Pradesh. 

The Carman family returned to the U.S. in 1963. John was appointed director
of the Center for Study of World Religions at Harvard Divinity School,
retiring from that post in 2002.  Ineke hosted many of the resident students
during that period.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. June 21 at First Church
Congregational in Cambridge, Mass. 

In addition to her husband, Ineke Carman is survived by a son, Peter Carman,
and two daughters, Tineke Vandegrift and Alice Carman.	Condolences may be
sent to them at 19 Devon Dr., Acton, MA 01720.
