ERD assists displaced in Congo following unrest
[ACNS source: Episcopal Relief and Development] Episcopal Relief and
Development is aiding over one thousand displaced families in the northeast
region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo after continued violence and
ethnic clashes. Villages have been ransacked and homes have been burnt
throughout the region. Over 400 people were killed in recent weeks.
Thousands of people have fled to other areas in the Congo and neighboring
Uganda.
"It is very unfortunate that the situation in the northeastern region of the
Congo has worsened again," said the Rt. Rev. P. B. Njojo, Bishop of Boga.
"There are currently thousands of people scattered along the border who are
not receiving any assistance."
Episcopal Relief and Development will provide emergency food, temporary
shelter, and medicine to displaced Congolese families. ERD's grant of
$22,000 to the Diocese of Boga will give emergency assistance to these
families currently in Rwebisengo, Fort-Portal, and Karugutu in Uganda and
Lac Albert in the Congo.
