	Southern District elects Schultz president

Rev. Kurtis D. Schultz, pastor of First Lutheran Church,
Birmingham, Ala., was elected to be the new president of the LCMS
Southern District at its June 12-14 convention in New Orleans.

Schultz, 49, was elected on the fourth ballot to succeed Rev.
Orval Mueller, who is retiring after five terms in office.

Delegates also elected Rev. Theodore M. Richter of Dothan, Ala.,
to his first term as first vice president and re-elected Rev. James
Brown Sr., Pensacola, Fla., as second vice president.

A resolution that delegates adopted calls for intra-district
discussions ... of issues causing dissension and division in the Synod,
starting with Southern District circuit convocations in 2005. The
resolution notes that the Synodwide Model Theological Convocation last
summer in Arizona began that process in the LCMS.

The district action quotes a 2001 Synod-convention resolution
that says such discussions should be held so that we are able to live
in genuine and God-pleasing harmony as Gods people and not allow
dissension among us to become destructive of the unity that should
characterize us as Gods people.

Southern District delegates also passed a resolution that the
LCMS remember to make mission emphasis and the Great Commission the
Synods No. 1 financial priority, citing two resolutions of the 2001
Synod convention that emphasize that priority.

The district resolution says the recent cost-saving elimination
of LCMS World Mission career missionary and staff positions contradicts
the Missouri Synods expressed commitment to the continuation of its
outreach emphasis and the commitment to be passionate for the Great
Commission.

Among other resolutions adopted at the Southern District
convention is one that encourages congregations to develop an
intentional action plan driven by their vision for ministry in that
place.
