Pastors' salaries rose 2.3% this year

Median salary for pastors serving congregations nears $45,000

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - The median salary of Presbyterian pastors serving congregations
rose 2.3 percent between May of 2002 and May of this year, according to a
study released this week by the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s Board of
Pensions.

As of May 1, 2003, the median salary of all PC(USA) ministers serving U.S.
congregations was $44,200, as compared with $43,200 one year earlier.

The average salary of these ministers is now $47,889, up $1,719 or 3.7% from
last year's average of $46,170.

The median salary is generally viewed as more representative than the average
salary, since it is less influenced by the very high or very low salaries.

The Board of Pensions tabulates pastors' salaries annually on May 1. The
figures include cash salary, manse amounts or housing allowances and deferred
compensation - the "effective salary" upon which pension and medical plan
dues are based.

Pastors on the West Coast and the Southeast fare the best when it comes to
compensation. The highest average salary is paid in the Synod of Southern
California and Hawaii, followed in order by the Synod of the Pacific and the
Synod of South Atlantic.

Predictably, the lowest average salary is paid in the Synod of Puerto Rico.

Average salaries overall have increased by almost 17 percent over the last
five years. The largest percentage growth has been in the Synod of the
Pacific with a percentage growth of 22.6 percent. Again, the least growth has
occurred in the Synod of Puerto Rico, just over 12 percent.

received by the ordained members of the Benefits Plan of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) please visit http://www.pcusa.org/pcnews/03267.htm
