	June 19, 2003 ....................... LCMSNews -- No. 56

Keurulainen returned to office by acclamation

By acclamation, delegates re-elected Rev. James Keurulainen to a
third term as district president during the LCMS New England District
convention, June 12-14 in Springfield, Mass.

They also re-elected Rev. Tim Yeadon of New Hartford, Conn.,
first vice president; Rev. Larry Nichols, Smithfield, R.I., second vice
president; and Rev. Ralph Sackschewsky, Hebron, Conn., third vice
president.

Delegates passed a resolution asking the LCMS Council of
Presidents to re-examine its guidelines regarding investigation of
allegations made against professional church workers.

Since these guidelines allow for some discretion from situation
to situation, a whereas says, concerns can arise in regards to
uniformity in handling such allegations throughout the entire Synod.

A resolved says that the re-examination should aim to bring
about uniformity to procedure, methodology and means of care for those
involved in such circumstances and calls for the guidelines to be used
throughout the Synod.

Another resolution asks the Synods Commission on Structure to
recommend to the 2004 Synod convention Bylaw changes that would address
issues raised by a 2001 opinion of the LCMS Commission on Constitutional
Matters. That opinion is that the Synod president can only be suspended
or deposed by the Synod in convention.

The resolution says that the CCM in its opinion recommended that
those issues be addressed.

Noting that many immigrants have moved into New England, another
adopted resolution encourages congregations to become involved in cross
cultural ministries and to become prayer partners in the Synods
Pentecost 2000+ initiative.

Mission Moments throughout the convention highlighted various
ministries in the district, including outreach to Brazilians in the
Boston area and food distribution as part of Hispanic outreach in
Lowell, Mass.
