Notes about people

by Jerry L. Van Marter

The Rev. James A. Thomas has been named associate director for evangelism and
church development in the National Ministries Division, succeeding the late
Rev. Rosalie Potter, who resigned last year after being diagnosed with ALS
(Lou Gehrig's Disease).

Thomas will move to Louisville in September from Charlotte, where he is
serving as Leadership Development Presbyter for Charlotte Presbytery. He also
has more than 23 years experience as a pastor, having served in Georgia,
Nebraska and Ohio.

With the presbytery he was responsible for church development, church-based
community organizing leader training and stewardship education.

Julia Helwig joined the staff of the Worldwide Ministries Division July 17 as
its funds development officer.

Her two immediate priorities include assisting the fundraising campaigns of
the division's International Leadership Development and International Health
Ministries programs. She will also be coordinating the division's
participation in "The Mission Initiative: Joining Hearts and Hands," a
campaign which will raise at least $20 million for international mission
personnel.

Helwig was formerly director of the Ministry Fund and alumni/ae relations at
Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Prior to her work at the
seminary, she served various non-profit organizations as executive and funds
developer.

survivors of torture and the trauma of war.
