Chair in African American Christianity to be inaugurated at SFTS

by Jerry Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - On Oct. 12, the Rev. James A. Noel will be installed as the
first occupant of the Rev. Dr. H. Eugene Farlough Chair in African American
Christianity at San Francisco Theological Seminary.

The Farlough Chair is the first such chair to be named in honor of an
African American Presbyterian at any of the Presbyterian Church (USA)-related
seminaries.

Farlough was a pivotal figure in the growth of racial ethnic
congregations in the San Francisco Bay area as a new church development
pastor and educator. He served for many years as a faculty member at SFTS and
the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta before his untimely
death in 1996.

The campaign to endow the Farlough Chair began shortly after his
death.
