Evangelism Sunday is September 28

by Jerry Van Marter

LOUISIVLLE - Lifting up the great diversity of all God's people is the
subject of the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s observance of Evangelism Sunday,
Sept. 28. The theme of this year's observance is "Embracing All God's
Children."

Writing in Good News, the quarterly newsletter of the Evangelism and
Church Development office, interim associate director Doug Wilson said some
of God's children needing the church's embrace these days are "lost boys"
from Sudan, AIDS sufferers in Africa, Middle Easterners victimized by
suspicion in the wake of 9/11, homeless mothers and their children, single
parents who "don't quite fit in the social circles of most family-centered
churches," African-Americans "badgered' by racial profiling, and people "who
mentally struggle to cope with every day routines."

A variety of resources for Evangelism Sunday are available on the
website www.pcusa.org/evangelism/churchdevelopment.

They include recent General Assembly reports on evangelism and ministries of
hospitality, worship resources that celebrate diversity, a sermon that talks
about evangelism from an Hispanic perspective, ideas for including persons
with disabilities in the life of the church, suggestions for responding to
racial ethnic and new immigrant populations - a primary focus of the
PC(USA)'s church growth strategy, and models for community outreach.

Evangelism Sunday organizers also recommend use of the six-session Bible
study, A House of Prayer for all Peoples, that was created for the recent
215th General Assembly.
