John Rhea dies at age 92

by John Filiatreau

LOUISVILLE - The Rev. John I. Rhea, 92, died on Aug. 12 at his home here. He
was diagnosed earlier this year with pancreatic cancer.

Rhea was instrumental in establishing older-adult ministries in the
Presbyterian Church (USA), and was the founder of the National Association of
Retired Ministers, Their Spouses and Survivors.

For the last 10 years of his life, he was a full-time volunteer in the
PC(USA)'s Office of Older Adult Ministry, helping presbyteries assess the
needs of older adults in congregations.

Rhea was a native of Bristol, TN, and a 1936 graduate of Louisville
Presbyterian Theological Seminary (LPTS). He served pastorates in Tennessee
and North Carolina before joining the U.S. Army as a chaplain during World
War II. During his 26-year-long military career, he was awarded the Legion of
Merit, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He retired in 1966 as a full colonel.

Rhea worked for the Board of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church
in the United States in Richmond, VA, before moving in 1974 to Louisville,
where he organized Senior Citizens East, a social-service agency for active
older adults.

In June, more than 100 of Rhea's colleagues at the Presbyterian Center
attended a reception to honor him and celebrate his life and career.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rosetta; a daughter, Judith R. Wiley,
of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Michael Wiley, Melissa Stickney, Stuart
Wiley and Valerie Gallo; one great-grandson, Owen Stickney; and a sister,
Kate Tate.

The funeral will be held at Harvey Browne Memorial Presbyterian Church in
Louisville, of which Rhea was a member.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of
Louisville, the American Cancer Society, and the Harvey Brown Memorial
Presbyterian Church building fund.
