Athens to host 2005 World Mission conference

SOFIA, Bulgaria - The 2005 Conference on World Mission and Evangelism will be
held in Athens, Greece, the Orthodox World News Service reported this week.

The Commission on World Mission and Evangelism of the World Council of
Churches (WCC) has received official acceptance from the Orthodox Church in
Greece, according to the news service.

No Orthodox-majority country has ever been the conference host.

The theme of the May 2005 conference will be "Come Holy Spirit, Heal and
Reconcile: Called in Christ to Be Reconciling and Healing Communities." About
500 official delegates are expected to attend, including representatives of
Orthodox, Protestant and Roman Catholic denominations and of various
evangelical and charismatic churches.

The most recent World Mission and Evangelism conference was held in Brazil in
1996, according to Fr. Martin Ritsi, executive director of the Orthodox
Christian Mission Centre (OCMC), one of seven Orthodox representatives on the
WCC Commission on World Mission and Evangelism.

The WCC general secretary, Dr. Konrad Raiser, recently commented on Orthodox
participation in ecumenical dialogue, saying, "There is no doubt for me that
the active presence of the Orthodox churches in the WCC has been essential in
shaping the understanding of our common ecumenical calling."
