Peter Akinola elected new CAPA Chairman

[ACNS source: Churches in the Anglican Provinces of Africa] The Most
Revd Peter Jasper Akinola is the new Chairman for the Council of
Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA).

Archbishop Akinola, who is the Primate of Nigeria, was elected
unanimously during the ninth session of the council in Nairobi last
week.

The Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa is a continental body that
brings together all the 12 Provinces in Africa and the Diocese of Egypt,
which falls under the Province of Jerusalem and Middle East. There are
about 42 million Anglican members in Africa.

CAPA secretariat is a based in Nairobi, Kenya, and is headed by the
General Secretary, the Revd Canon John Kanyikwa who oversees the
day-to-day activities of the council.

Archbishop Akinola began his ministry as a vicar in St James, Suleja,
Nigeria in 1978 after graduating with a Diploma in Theology from the
Theological College of Northern Nigeria. He was later admitted to
Virginia Theological Seminary in the United States where he graduated
with a Masters Degree in Theology.

He served as the Provincial Missionary for Church of Nigeria between
1984 and 1989 before being elected Bishop of Abuja in 1989 and later
Archbishop of Province III in 1998.

He became Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria in 2002
and leads about 18 million Anglicans in Nigeria.

At the same time, Bishop Onesphore Rwaje of Rwanda has been elected CAPA
vice-chairman replacing Bishop Jo Seoka of Pretoria while Mr John Muhoho
of Anglican Church of Kenya will be the new Treasurer replacing Mr Nat
Stanley who retires.
