	October 2, 2003 .................... LCMSNews -- No. 117

	DVD is today's
	'medium of choice'

The DVD is becoming the "medium of choice" for the Synod's
promotional videos, according to Philip Hohle, owner of Parabolic
Productions, a St. Louis-based video production company that produces a
number of LCMS videos.

"The rapid adoption of this new video format has been stunning,
far outpacing the acceptance of VHS over 20 years ago," Hohle said. Some
large chains such as Circuit City have dropped VHS completely in favor
of DVDs, according to Hohle, and more than 40 million U.S. households
now have DVD players.

More than 7,500 "Ablaze" DVDs were mailed to Synod congregations
and schools in September, and a pre-Youth Gathering DVD was mailed to
all 6,100 congregations this summer.

Why is DVD replacing VHS in the Synod and elsewhere? Hohle
provided a few reasons:

	* It generally costs less to mail a DVD disc than a VHS tape.

	* DVDs are significantly less expensive to replicate than
videotapes.

	* More video can be included on a DVD than VHS tape, making it
possible to include several programs in a single mailing.

	* DVD is interactive, allowing viewers to choose instantly which
portion of the program they want to see.

	* DVD is available on many laptop and desktop computers,
expanding the number of potential viewers.

	* When DVDs are captioned, special television equipment is not
needed to view them.

	* The quality of DVD far surpasses VHS, CD and Web-based media.

Even though the Synod's recent video programs have been produced
on DVD, VHS versions will continue to be available to those who request
them, Hohle said. Nevertheless, Synod congregations that do not yet have
a DVD player may want to purchase one, he added, "since we expect that
more and more religious programs will be produced on DVD rather than
VHS."
