Seminar to explore link between media, supernatural

by Jerry L. Van Marter
and Gregg Hartung,
Presbyterian Media Mission

PITTSBURGH - Lynn Schofield Clark, author of From Angels to Aliens: Teens,
the Media, and the Supernatural, will address the growing exploration of the
supernatural among youth in the media culture at an Oct. 15 seminar in
suburban Pittsburgh.

The seminar, the second annual event co-sponsored by the Christian Associates
of Southwestern Pennsylvania and the Presbyterian Media Mission (PMM) under
the theme "Christianity and Popular Media," is part of the "Electronic Great
Awakening" - a media literacy campaign of PMM and the Presbyterian Church
(USA).

In 2002, the two groups hosted a seminar with the Rev. David Bruce, creator
of hollywoodjesus.com, where church leaders, members and parents were able to
look at the spirituality in contemporary films and learn how to use them as
teaching tools in ministry.

For her book, Clark - a youth minister and member of the University of
Colorado media project - conducted over 250 interviews to find out where
teens are at in their beliefs and why.

She found strong connections between fascination with the supernatural
stories of modern popular culture and evangelical Christianity, as well as an
openness from teens to receive these messages.

The seminar, as with her book, promises bold new insights into the way
parents and kids should be looking at popular media.

The seminar includes lunch and a screening of a first run movie. For
reservations, contact Tina Hartung at (412) 323-1400, ext. 310, or email
thartung@nauticom.net by Friday October 10. For more information, log on to
