	11 men finish DELTO --
	St. Louis sems first

Eleven men -- the first to complete the Synods Distance
Education Leading To Ordination (DELTO) program through Concordia
Seminary, St. Louis -- received their diplomas during the seminarys
Sept. 7 opening service.

DELTO is the Synods theological-education program that leads to
ordination for men who provide ministry to congregations that are not
able to support a full-time pastor or who serve in extraordinary
circumstances.

The 11 St. Louis graduates entered the DELTO program in 1998 and
remained in the places where they were in ministry while they took
distance-education courses assigned by seminary professors. During that
time, Synod pastors served as mentors to the students.

Most of the men are assigned to the congregations they have been
serving. Two of three assigned as missionaries are serving Hmong
congregations. The Hmong are immigrants and refugees from Southeast
Asia.

The St. Louis seminary now has 16 men in the DELTO program. Of
those, six are expected to complete the program in December 2004 and 10
a year later.

Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, graduated its first
DELTO class of 10 men in February 2002. In March this year, six more men
graduated from the program there. The seminary currently has 14 DELTO
students, with plans for seven to graduate in 2005 and seven in 2008.
