Viscountess to encourage Anglicans in Africa

[ACNS source: Church Mission Society] Viscountess Brentford, President of
the Church Mission Society (CMS), is to visit the infamous Kibera Settlement
in Nairobi - Africa's biggest slum - to highlight the transformational work
of the Church in Africa.

Lady Brentford, the Third Estates Commissioner of the Church of England,
will visit the Urban Mission Centre and meet AIDS victims there to help
raise the profile of the Church's work.

CMS is involved in training 300 local 'slum pastors' - Christians who live
in the 600,000-strong settlement - in HIV/AIDS care, modelling a
community-based rather than a 'top down' form of care.

She will also be Guest of Honour at the centenary of one of East Africa's
leading theological colleges on 18 October.

CMS founded what is now St Paul's United Theological College at Limuru,
Nairobi, a hundred years ago, as a school for freed slaves on Kenya's coast.
It is now a leading player in the work of the Anglican Communion in Africa.

Former alumni include the new General Secretary of the World Council of
Churches, the Methodist Revd Dr Samuel Kobia, and world-renowned theologian,
the former Archbishop of Kenya, Dr David Gitari. The ceremony will be
attended by Kenyan MPs and leaders of the Church in Africa and Britain.
