Human rights, Palestine/Israel, and advocacy issues discussed
during International Affairs Week at UN
10-14 November 2003, New York, USA

The Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA)
of the World Council of Churches (WCC) will sponsor a series of
public seminars and workshops bringing together key
representatives of specialized ministries, ecumenical
organizations, and WCC member churches. The seminars are
scheduled to coincide with the UN General Assembly meeting in
order to make the work and concerns of the churches more visible
at the UN. The seminars will focus on such themes as human rights
and the Sudan peace talks. A seminar on Tuesday 11 November
focused on Palestine/Israel will include a keynote speech from
Avraham Burg, member of the Knesset. On Thursday 13 November, a
seminar led by WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser and
Ambassador Mohamed Sahnoun of Algeria will focus on the ethical
and theological concerns surrounding "the responsibility to
protect".

Jewish-Christian consultation: Understanding oneself through the
other
12-14 November 2003, New York, USA

The WCC Office on Interreligious Relations and Dialogue and the
Centre for Interreligious Understanding (Secaucus, New Jersey)
are convening a Jewish-Christian consultation in New York,
November 12-14, 2003, which will gather around 15 participants,
mostly clergy and academics. 
They will address these key questions: How do our understanding
of Jews and Judaism and our relationships with Jews and living
Judaism shape the way we Christans think about ourselves?  How do
our understandings of Christianity and Christians, and our
relationships with Christians and living Christianity shape the
way we Jews think about ourselves? Key Christian speakers will be
Rev. Dr Wesley Ariarajah, from Drew University, Madison, USA; and
Dr Petra Heldt, from Ecumenical Theological Research Fraternity,
Israel.

Consultation on a reconfiguration of the ecumenical movement
17-20 November 2003, Antelias, Lebanon

The WCC has invited committed ecumenists with varying
backgrounds in theological, organizational, and historical
knowledge to reassess the ecumenical movement. Participants will
analyze the main challenges presented by a changing world,
identify key areas of necessary change and renewal, and design a
process of consultation that could lead to proposals of
reconfiguration to organizations involved. Members from Christian
World Communions, regional and national councils of churches,
mission bodies, church-related aid agencies and WCC member
churches will take part in this consultation.

Consultation: Living the Christian faith in the context of
globalization
20-24 November 2003, Cartigny, Switzerland

This consultation, which hopes to develop faith-based criteria
for alternatives to economic globalization, will bring together
15 representatives from Christian World Communions and
confessional families along with staff members from the WCC, the
Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the World Association of
Reformed Churches (WARC). Entitled "The spirituality of
resistance", the consultation is the second in a series that aims
to answer a question posed by the 1998 WCC assembly in Harare:
"How do we live our faith in the context of globalization?".

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is a fellowship of churches,
now 342, in more than 100 countries in all continents from
virtually all Christian traditions. The Roman Catholic Church is
not a member church but works cooperatively with the WCC. The
highest governing body is the assembly, which meets approximately
every seven years. The WCC was formally inaugurated in 1948 in
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Its staff is headed by general
secretary Konrad Raiser from the Evangelical Church in Germany.
