Tentmakers pitching annual conference

Maine thing is to bring together Presbyterians and Episcopalians

by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE - "Sailing with the Wind or Rowing Against the Tide" is the theme
of this year's annual conference of the Association of Presbyterian
Tentmakers (APT).

The three-day event begins on Oct. 31 at the Bangor Theological Seminary in
Bangor, ME. It is being co-sponsored by the National Association for the
Self-Supporting Active Ministry (NASSAM) of the Episcopal Church.

"It's a chance for sharing our stories," says the Rev. Fred Bunning of
Loveland, CO, the APT moderator.

Tentmakers are ministers who serve in church positions but derive all or most
of their income from other employment. Bunning, for example, is a part-time
pastor of Weldon Valley Presbyterian Church in Goodrich, CO, who also manages
concession stands for the city of Loveland, CO.

The conference will feature networking opportunities, worship and panel
discussions with a variety of guests from the PC(USA) and other faith groups.

Among the panelists and invited guests: the Rev. Carl Geores, a retired
Presbyterian minister and founder of Mission at the Eastward (MATE), a
cooperative parish of nine Presbyterian congregations in Central Maine; the
Rev. Scott Planting, the MATE coordinator; the Rev. Tony Pappas, a New
England Baptist minister and editor of "The Five Stones" newsletter; and
Sister Lucy Poulin, the founder and coordinator of HOME-Orland, Maine, a
co-op and advocate for the poor.

For more information, contact Lea McCloud, APT's treasurer and conference
registrar, by phone at (316) 641-2964, or by email at
