2004 Mission Yearbook is available now

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - The 2004 edition of the Mission Yearbook for Prayer & Study, the
most widely used guide to Presbyterian Church (USA) mission around the world,
is available now.

This 112th annual edition of the Mission Yearbook "is the best one
yet," said Deborah Bowker Haines, its editor. "We've been dogged in
encouraging more Presbyterians to tell more of their stories and include more
pictures."

The result is a dazzling array of hundreds of stories and photographs
of people in mission in the United States and around the world.

The yearbook also includes "minutes for mission" for each Lord's Day
that focus on liturgical themes and PC(USA) mission programs, lists of
prayers for Presbyterians in mission at all levels of the church, daily
lectionary readings and suggested hymns, lists of the church-related
educational institutions, synod and presbytery maps, and demographic profiles
to help readers learn more about the places where the church is in mission.

The theme of the 2004 book is "A new commandment I give to you, that
you love one another" (John 13:34). The theme is introduced in an essay by
the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, stated clerk of the General Assembly. The
yearbook also includes a personal message from the Rev. Susan R. Andrews,
moderator of the 215th General Assembly.

The yearbook features a special 16-page color section by the Rev.
Duncan Hanson, former area coordinator for Europe in the denomination's
Worldwide Ministries Division. In the section - titled "We Are Called to
Serve in FaithWorking Side by Side in Mission" - Hanson writes: "Love is the
force behind mission. The essence of that love is learning and living in the
culture of the other. Mission without that kind of love is like a fire
without air."

"We're particularly proud of Duncan's insert," Haines told the
Presbyterian News Service. "It's carefully crafted to relate to the theme of
the book, and tells eloquently what it's like to go into another culture as a
mission worker and work with partners in integrity. And it's written by
someone who's been doing just that for the PC(USA) for years and years."

The 2004 Mission Yearbook for Prayer & Study is available at $8.50
per copy ($7.50 apiece in orders of 10 or more), plus shipping. Hanson's
insert is available separately at $2 apiece, $9 for five copies, or $15 for
10 copies. To order the yearbook (product #PDS 70-612-04-450) or the special
insert (#PDS 70-612-04-449), call Presbyterian Distribution Service at (800)
