Pitney Bowes, Rainbow/PUSH win workplace awards

Project Equality honors pair for promoting workforce diversity

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Project Equality, a faith-based non-profit that promotes
employment diversity in America's workplaces, has named Pitney Bowes and the
Wall Street Project of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition as winners of its annual
"Pride and Excellence Awards."

The Kansas City-based organization, which is supported by the
Presbyterian Church (USA) and whose director, the Rev. Kirk Perucca, is a
Presbyterian minister, works with corporations and communities to increase
diversity and equal opportunity in workplaces.

It also maintains a Buyers' Guide so consumers can direct their
business to companies who have been certified by Project Equality as being
committed to diversity and fair employment practices.

Pitney Bowes, a Project Equality-certified company since 1968 (and
one of the first) was named 2003 Employer of the Year. The company includes
41 percent people of color in its workforce and quadrupled the amount of
business it does with minority- and women-owned businesses between 2001 and
2002.

The company is also active in training minority students for
executive positions, teaching at historically black colleges, loaning
executives to such organizations as the National Urban League, helping launch
endowment funds for young minority business students and establishing
professional associations for young minority executives.

"Nurturing and valuing the diversity of our customers and business
partners strengthens Pitney Bowes' competitive position in the global
marketplace," said Pitney Bowes executive Henry Hernandez in accepting the
award. "The bottom line: diversity is just good business."

The Wall Street Project of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition received
Project Equality's 2003 Pride and Excellence Community Award. Working in New
York City's financial capitol, the Wall Street Project was honored for
helping the financial industry there improve hiring and promotion practices,
diversifying their corporate boards, directing more business to
minority-owned vendors and helping minority-owned businesses transact more
business with each other.
