by Jerry L. Van Marter

Catherine Carpenter, 54, a former editor for the Presbyterian Publishing
Corporation and the eldest daughter of renowned Presbyterian mission
interpreter Marj Carpenter, died on Jan. 24 in a nursing home in Big Spring,
TX.

She had suffered from diabetes for more than 24 years and endured 10 trips to
various intensive-care units. She apparently died of a heart attack.

Carpenter spent most of her adult life in the publishing business in London,
Philadelphia, Houston and Louisville. She also taught modern English
literature in universities in England and Wales.

Services are scheduled for Jan. 28 in Big Spring. In addition to her mother,
Catherine Carpenter is survived by a sister, Carolyn Stewart; a brother, Jim
Bob; two nephews and a niece.

Memorial gifts may be given to the Faith Factor Fund (ECO #051790), which was
established by the General Assembly to rebuild the PC(USA)'s international
missionary or to the music fund of First Presbyterian Church in Big Spring.
