Eleven Native American projects receive grants

The United Methodist Church's initiative for supporting Native American
ministries has awarded $159,000 in grants to 11 programs for the coming year.

Top leaders of the Native American Comprehensive Plan, which emphasizes
Native American congregational and leadership development, announced the
grants during a Jan. 29-30 meeting. 

The recipients include a variety of ministries and events, such as a national
Native American young adult gathering planned for this fall. Funding was also
allocated to the North Central Jurisdiction for a jurisdictional network and
organization of Native American ministries.

Led by a 19-member task force, the plan addresses the needs of the 1.9
million American Indians who live in the denomination's 64 annual conferences
in the United States.

Ministries funded include:
7	Native American United Methodist Gathering, Phoenix Valley
Metropolitan Area, $25,000, to develop a church in the Phoenix area.
7	Albuquerque (N.M.) Native Ministry, $25,000, to develop a new church.
7	Southeastern Jurisdiction Native American Ministry's "From Brokenness
to Healing," $23,000, to support an annual jurisdictional native gathering.
7	North Central Jurisdiction, $19,000, to support jurisdictional Native
American ministries.
7	Triad Native American United Methodist Church, Greensboro, N.C.
$15,000, to support church programs.
7	KulliTuklo United Methodist Church, Broken Bow, Okla., $11,170, to
support church youth ministry.
7	Norman (Okla.) First American, $10,000, to support pre-youth ministry
programs.
7	KulliChito United Methodist Church, Idabel, Okla., $9,300, to support
the church's youth ministry.
7	Wilshire United Methodist Church, Portland, Ore., $8,300, to support
a native ministry at the church.
7	Michigan Annual Conference, $6,100, to provide second-year funding of
a Native American Course of Study program.
7	Nagawee United Methodist Church, Shawnee, Okla., $3,950, to assist in
resurrecting local church programs. .
7	"God's Call for Ministry," a program of the North Carolina Annual
Conference, $3,182, to help people discover different types of ministry.
