American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 2/18/04)--Bread for the
World, the Christian antihunger organization supported by many American
Baptist individuals and churches, has launched its 2004 campaign "Keep the
Promise on Hunger and Health."

The current focus, like all of Bread for the World's campaigns over the past
30 years, asks individuals and their churches to participate in an "Offering
of Letters" in which correspondence advocating action is sent to
congressional representatives.

The 2004 campaign urges the president and Congress to make good on promises
to fight poverty by making sure that several new major foreign assistance
programs, approved in January by Congress, are fully funded.

The Millennium Challenge Account is expected to nearly double previous
funding designated by the U.S. for global development assistance to countries
meeting certain eligibility criteria. The Emergency Plan for HIV/AIDS is a
global program that responds to the crisis that disease has produced in many
parts of the world.

Bread for the World officials are "calling upon elected leaders to fight this
cycle of hunger and disease through the MCA and AIDS relief
initiatives-without slashing existing programs that effectively reduce
poverty around the world."
