ABCUSA: Louis Knoll, Former Missionary in South India, Dies

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 3/2/04)--Dr. Louis Knoll, former American Baptist International Ministries missionary in South India, died Feb. 12 at age 78.  

Knoll and his wife, Doris, served in India for 27 years beginning in 1951.  He was president and professor at Ramapathnam Baptist Seminary for 11 years.  He also was mission correspondent and legal representative for American Baptist mission work in South India and was an active consultant for the Assam and Bengal-Orissa fields.  He was co-founder of Andhra Christian Theological College at Secunderabad and provided leadership at Serampore University, founded by William Carey in 1818, as master of the senate. 

In addition Knoll supervised property transfers from the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society into Indian hands and designed a central budget for the Telugu Baptist Convention.

 From 1978 to 1985 he was vice president of business and financial affairs at American Baptist Seminary of the West.  The Knolls later moved to Canada and retired to Vancouver Island.
