	March 17, 2004 .................... LCMSNews -- No. 29

	Internet virus 'spoofs' e-mail origin

The Synod's Information Services Department has issued a virus
warning.

The Synod has become aware that some e-mail users have been
receiving messages that appear to come from the LCMS (a deceptive
technique called "spoofing"). The message pretends to be a warning from
the "LCMS.org team" and it states that there is a problem regarding
e-mail service.

Two of the several versions circulating the Internet are as
follows:

	1. "Our antivirus software has detected a large amount of
viruses outgoing from your e-mail account. You may use our free
anti-virus tool to clean up your computer software. Advanced details can
be found in attached file." (A password-protected zip file may be
attached along with a password. Because the contents of a
password-protected zip file are impossible for an antivirus program to
scan unless it is opened by a user, the virus may bypass many
	scanners.)

	2. "Our main mailing server will be temporarily unavailable for
the next two days. To continue receiving mail, you have to configure our
free auto-forwarding service. For details see the attached file." (The
attachment contains a virus.)

While the LCMS will, on occasion send an e-mail message to a
list of subscribers on a technical topic, it will never include program
files or zip files with these. If you receive such a file and were not
expecting it, do NOT open it -- just delete the message.
