ABCUSA: Sheldon Downs, Former Missionary in India, Died Jan. 28

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 3/19/04)--Word has been
received that the Rev. E. Sheldon Downs, M.D., former American Baptist
missionary in India, died Jan. 28.  He was 102.

Following appointment by the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society,
Sheldon Downs and his wife, Gladys, began missionary service in India at Tura
in Assam in 1927. They retired in 1967 after serving 40 years in medical and
other ministries among the Garo people in the Tura area.

In 1947 Downs was honored by the King of England with the award of the
coveted Kaisar-I-Hind medal in recognition of "distinguished service in
India."

Following his retirement from the AMFMS Downs worked for five years at the
Daniel Boone Clinic in Middlesboro, Ky. 

Gladys Sheldon died in 1980.  A memorial service for Sheldon Downs will be
held 2 p.m. April 17 at First Baptist Church, Hyannis, Mass.
