American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 3/19/04)--"The New
Americans," a seven-hour documentary mini-series, will premier nationwide as
a special broadcast of PBS on March 29, 30 and 31 at 9:00 p.m. (Check local
listings.) 

The mini-series presents four years in the lives of contemporary immigrants
and refugees from Nigeria, the Dominican Republic and Palestine. The National
Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights has joined PBS and a host of other
groups in a national campaign to use the film to increase public awareness
about immigrants, refugees and the nation's changing communities.

"Documentaries like 'The New Americans' put a human face on overwhelming
statistics that could prevent us from providing help where and when we can,"
said Ken George, who coordinates the American Baptist refugee resettlement
program for National Ministries. "Since 1948 American Baptist churches have
responded with generous hearts to offer new homes and hopes to people in
desperate situations."

American Baptist Churches USA has been a consistent leader in refugee
resettlement among Protestant denominations who work with Church World
Service. Since the end of World War II American Baptists have sponsored more
than 90,300 refugees from more than 25 countries. 

The nonprofit U.S. Committee for Refugees has documented some 15 million
refugees worldwide; millions of additional internally displaced persons also
