The Christian Family Counseling Center in Kaohsiung, an agency of two local
districts of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, has started a unique ministry
to foreign women who have married into working class Taiwanese families in
recent years. These women hail from Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and
elsewhere. The families into which they have wed generally have motorbikes,
but getting a license to operate one legally is a difficult barrier for the
brides to surmount.

The counseling center now offers a two-day training course in Kaohsiung's
Talinpu neighborhood. Nine enrolled in the first session. Of these, 7 passed
the written exam and 5 made it through the road test. One of the participants
got 100% on both tests and two scored above 95!

Taking the motorbike test is not considered a big thing for most people in
Taiwan, but the foreign brides find their language inability hinders them.
Beyond that, there is general pressure felt when facing any exam. Their pass
rate on the exam is therefore lower Taiwan's general population. Learning of
this need the Christian Family Counseling Center moved ahead in tangible
mission for one small community of women to ease their transition into
Taiwan's society and the family situations in their new homes.
