American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 4/14/04)--The American
Baptist Churches USA World Relief Office has designated One Great Hour of
Sharing emergency funds to respond to needs caused by ongoing civil unrest
and instability in Haiti.

A grant of $5,000 has been sent to support a Church World Service appeal
for donations to fund shipments of medical supplies and food. CWS reports
that the northern part of the country especially remains un-stable, in the
wake of the fall of the Aristide government earlier this year. According to
CWS "kidnappings, shootings and rebel incursions" still are commonplace
and the rule of law remains to be enforced in certain areas.

Other OGHS grants include $5,000, which will be released to the Convention
Baptiste d'Haiti to support their own relief efforts that include
restoration of schools that were looted, and $1,000 to Hands for America to
aid in the shipment of relief and humanitarian aid for over 100,000
displaced families.

American Baptists wishing to support relief efforts in Haiti can do so
through their church's monthly report of mission support, designating
contributions "OGHS-Haiti Relief." Those wishing to contribute online can
do so by accessing the "American Baptist Missions" or "Give Now" pages of
the ABCUSA Web site--www.abc-usa.org.
