American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 4/30/04)--In View from the
Pew: What Preachers Can Learn from Church Members, newly released by Judson
Press, author Lora-Ellen McKinney provides an eye opener for many a pastor
who sometimes sends unintended messages.

This disconnect happens not just through the words that emanate from the
pulpit, but through the attitudes and behaviors pastors exhibit throughout
the week.

In his foreword Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., senior pastor of Trinity United
Church of Christ in Chicago, describes the book as "One of the most
insightful and helpful books on homiletics that perhaps has ever been written
by a non-practitioner of the craft of preaching."

View from the Pew is a resource for all pastors and active laypersons, but is
especially relevant in the African American context out of which it was
developed. Whether seasoned or new to the pulpit, pastors will gain an
understanding and knowledge from the wisdom of the "hearers," ultimately
leading to more clear and effective preaching.

McKinney, a lifelong Baptist and daughter of a third-generation minister,
brings expertise through observation of those who stand in the pulpit as well
as analysis of in-depth research and interviews.

A deacon at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., McKinney heads
her own consulting firm and holds numerous degrees, including a masters in
public administration from Harvard University and a doctorate in psychology
from the University of Washington. She is the author of Christian Education
in the African American Church and Total Praise! An Orientation to Black
Baptist Belief and Worship.
