Northern Kansas Presbytery wins theological education prize

New award is named for presbyter-educator John B. Evans

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Northern Kansas Presbytery has received the inaugural John B.
Evans Award for supporting theological education in the Presbyterian Church
(USA).

The award, established by the Theological Education Advancement Team in the
Office of Theological Education, will be presented annually to a presbytery
that has incorporated funding for theological education into its work.

The Kansas presbytery received the award on April 15 in Chicago during the
annual gathering of the Theological Education Funding Network.

Evans, a native of Laurinburg, NC, served the PC(USA) as a pastor, college
professor and presbytery executive and in various education-related
departments of the national staff before his retirement in 1994.

"John Evans has been an inspiration to all of us who work on behalf of
theological education in the Presbyterian Church," said Patsy Godwin of the
Office of Theological Education. "His work (as executive presbyter) in New
Harmony Presbytery has become the model for encouraging every presbytery to
take ownership of the Theological Education Fund."

The fund is the only church-wide vehicle for support of PC(USA) seminaries.
Participating congregations pledge 1 percent of their operating budgets each
year. In 2003, more than 2,100 congregations - just under 20 percent -
contributed.
