For Immediate Release

QUOTABLE QUOTE: The 60th Anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 2004, "is for our
Churches an occasion to express our gratitude for the heroism of those who
freed us from the Nazi yoke b& That peoples pulled into bitter combat with
each other could have found the ways of reconciliation and peace b& deserves
to be honored by all those who in this world wish to be led by the God who
calls all people to be peacemakers b& We call upon those governments that are
joining together June 6 on the beaches of Normandy to accept that they bear
the same responsibility as sixty years ago: to give to the world the means of
reconciliation and peace. These include support for those international
institutions born of the victory of 1945 which encourage reconciliation, the
adoption of economic policies that promote justice, and the casting of
visions for peace." -- Statement by ecumenical leaders from the United
States, Canada, Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

BRIEFLY NOTED: Members of a U.S. humanitarian delegation to Colombia May
23-26 said they were struck by the discrimination and exclusion faced by
displaced Afro-Colombians - and by the spirit of commitment and hope embodied
by many of the Afro-Colombians they met. Christian Methodist Episcopal Bishop
Thomas L. Hoyt Jr., President of the National Council of Churches USA, was a
delegation member, and commented, "The Afro-Colombians helped me to see from
the ground up when it comes to looking at what the real needs are: Therebs a
need for jobsb&health careb&educationb&a place to stayb&protection." He
added that he also "heard the name of God invoked in a way that says that God
provides, in connection with our human ingenuity and our creative
imagination." The visit was organized by Church World Service and the
Washington-based U.S. Office on Columbia at the invitation of Columbian
churches and Afro-Colombian organizations.
