Taiwan Church News 2728, 7 - 13 June 2004
Reported by Hsiao Shiuh-ching. Translated and Rewritten by David Alexander

The President of Chang Jung Christian University, an agency of the
Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, spent part of the school's graduation ceremony
on June 5th on his knees in front of a student whose feet he was washing.
Dr.
Chen Jin-sheng and twelve other professors and school officials each washed
the feet of a student.	This action has become a tradition at the school
since
its first graduation ceremony less than ten years ago.

The act is based on the Biblical model of Jesus, as found in the story in
chapter 13 of the fourth gospel. The school seeks to encourage students to a
spirit of humility and service in the hope that, following their graduation,
they will humbly serve in Taiwan's society.

Last year Chang Jung's tradition was broken, as were those of most schools in
Taiwan. The SARS contagion prevented large gatherings, so Chang Jung's
graduation was held on the World Wide Web.
