Grand Rapids, Mich., June 17, 2004 - Synod 2004 of the Christian Reformed
Church approved a new policy regarding the reinstatement of pastors or church
office bearers who are found guilty of sexual abuse or misconduct.

The policy outlines circumstances where reinstatement would never be
permitted. These include cases involving sexual misconduct against a minor or
multiple offenses that establish a pattern of sexual misconduct.

The policy also requires that churches and classes seek legal counsel and the
advice of a licensed Christian psychologist before reinstating an office
bearer who has been suspended or deposed for sexual misconduct.

Delegates also approved a study committee to examine "Third Wave"
Pentecostalism, which includes such things as spiritual warfare, and
deliverance ministries. They asked the committee to examine biblical
teaching, the Reformed confessions, and pastoral dimensions related to this
issue. The committee was asked to try to complete its report in time for
Synod
2006.

In addition, synod received notice of the retirement of 24 ministers.
Synod's
second clerk, Rev. Wayne Brouwer, expressed thanks for these ministers'
combined 775 years of service and prayed for God's continued blessing in
their
lives.

This morning delegates began to discuss new guidelines for training people as
ministers in the Christian Reformed Church.
