ABCUSA: World Relief Committee Approves Funding

American Baptist News Service (Green Lake, Wis. 6/25/04)--In semiannual
session here June 24 the American Baptist Churches' World Relief Committee
has voted to fund a number of new and ongoing relief and development programs
and projects in the U.S. and overseas. 
       
The committee establishes policy for distribution of funds from the One Great
Hour of Sharing Offering.  Projects presented were undertaken by American
Baptist International Ministries, American Baptist National Ministries and
Baptist World Aid of the Baptist World Alliance.
       
Among projects funded for mission in the U.S.: Diablo Valley Services, a
ministry to low-income and marginalized children and adults in Concord,
Calif. ($15,000); Routes 128/495/2 Metro West Interfaith Sponsoring
Committee, a regional community improvement organization in Marlborough,
Mass. ($12,500); Outreach Program of Fairview Community Baptist Church in
Camden, N.J., a ministry to urban children ($33,000 over three years);
Leaders for Equality and Action in Dayton (Ohio), a multicultural ministry
supported by First Baptist Church of Dayton ($15,000); Rhode Island
Organizing Project in Providence, an adult education project ($30,000 over
three years); Triangle of Hope, a ministry of New Hope Missionary Baptist
Church in Milwaukee, Wis. ($20,000 over two years); Wisconsin Council of
Churches' program for low-income families ($30,000 over three years);
Community Alliance to Support Education, an educational ministry involving
American Baptists in Belle, W.V. ($20,000 over tw

 years); Hagar's, a ministry of Queen Street Baptist Church in Norfolk, Va.,
providing housing and supportive services ($4,000); Kid's Connection, a
ministry of First Baptist Church in Crestline, Calif. ($2,000) and Downtown
Cluster of Congregations in Washington, D.C, a church-sponsored response to
gang violence ($7,500). 
       
Overseas projects funded today include: Women's Micro-enterprise Loan Fund, a
project of the Evangelical Baptist Churches of Congo ($10,000); a recording
studio for radio ministry in Kigali, Rwanda, supported by the Union of
Baptist Churches in Rwanda ($6,250); the Gaza Library, a project of Gaza
Baptist Church in Palestine ($10,000); a community health and education
project of the Nepal Baptist Church Council ($4,225); and a sanitation
project of the Nepal Baptist Church Council ($2,000).
