Nominating committee followed rules, chair says

RICHMOND, June 27 - Sandy Peirce, the chair of the Stated Clerk Review and
Nominating Committee, said during a news conference Sunday that she was
"thrilled to bring the name of Clifton Kirkpatrick forward as our nominee for
stated clerk."

"The good that he has done for the church is not yet at an end," she said.

The committee was strictly faithful to the standing rules on nominations and
elections of the General Assembly stated clerk, she said.

Asked about the fairness of the process - in which the committee decides
whether or not to re-nominate the incumbent before accepting other
nominations - Peirce said, "This has to do with doing what the rules call us
to do - that's what's fair." Asked whether the process doesn't favor the
incumbent, committee member Tom Orr said, "A strong incumbent favors the
incumbent."

The committee reviews the work of the stated clerk, who must declare his
intention to seek re-election no later than 180 days before the start of the
next Assembly. The committee must decide whether to re-nominate the incumbent
no later than 150 days before the opening of the General Assembly.
