Theological task force unveils new video

Most members of test audience give new production a thumbs-up

by Shane Whisler

RICHMOND, June 27 - The first group to view the latest video about the
journey of the Theological Task Force on the Peace, Unity and Purity of the
Church (TTF) generally gave it thumbs-up, although a few voiced reservations.

Some hailed it as an excellent resource to help people wrestle with the
weighty theological exploration of the question, "Who is Jesus Christ?"

"I want to commend the General Assembly and this task force," one viewer
said, "because this is the beginning of an engagement of that question that I
think will work its way down into the grass roots of our church."

He said the video was "very stimulating" and that it makes Christ come alive
in a new way.

A few viewers expressed disappointment that it didn't offer any specific
answers to the theological questions it raises.

Jean S. "Jenny" Stoner, a TTF co-moderator, introduced the video, saying that
it is meant to share a small portion of the life-changing journey the members
of the task force have embarked on. The video, presented in three segments,
is a condensed version of a presentation on Christology prepared by Mark
Achtemeier, a professor at Dubuque Theological Seminary, for the task force.

Stoner said the video would normally be shown one segment at a time, with an
hour allowed after each for small-group discussions, as suggested in a leader
guide. After each of the first two segments, Frances Taylor Gench, a TTF
member and a professor at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School
of Christian Education (Union-PSCE), led five observers in discussion,
modeling a small-group dynamic in which each participant invites another to
speak (or pass) about a particular question.

Stoner encouraged the crowd of 125 viewers to make use of the new resource.

"This is not a report to be filed, but used as an interactive resource," she
said. "Use it, and use it widely. Join us in striving to discern where God
is leading us as the Presbyterian Church (USA)."
