Health ministries announces new award

Prize in memory of Presbyterian benefactor will be presented first in 2006

by Erin Cox-Holmes

Richmond, June 27 - The newly created Elise Woodward Stutzer National Health
Ministry Award will be presented every other year to a Presbyterian woman
"who unselfishly gives of her time (as a volunteer) and/or resources to
minister to the health needs of her congregation/community or to the
denomination."

The award's creation was announced during a reception on Sunday. It will be
awarded for the first time in 2006, during the 217th General Assembly in
Birmingham, AL.

Elise Stutzer was an extraordinary Presbyterian, a long-time member of
Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, NY, who during life used
her great wealth to support a large number of causes and people in need,
often anonymously.

She not only gave money, but also volunteered extensively in her church,
where she was a deacon, and volunteered with the American Red Cross and
Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

Stutzer died in 1976, at age 81, leaving the largest estate on record in
Brooklyn. In addition to a large bequest to the Presbyterian Church (USA),
she commissioned the painting of a mural for her congregation and gave
generous gifts to Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, the Visiting Nurse Association
of Brooklyn, Planned Parenthood Foundation and the American Red Cross.

"National Health Ministries exists due to Elise Stutzer's gift," said Pat
Gleich, the PC(USA)'s associate for National Health Ministries. "I am so
thrilled we've finally recognized her for her immeasurable contribution."

Stutzer's gift also paid for the development of the health ministries Web
site, the launch of the Congregational Health Liaison Network and grants to
congregations for "Encircling Care" projects.

Barbara Easley and Sandy Pait, Stutzer's niece and great-niece, were on hand
to unveil the new award, a handsome ceramic plaque designed by Louisville
Stoneware that features a likeness of Miss Stutzer. The plaque's border
reflects the design of the "Wildflower Garden" Gates at Brooklyn Botanical
Gardens, which were commissioned by Elise Stutzer in honor of her father,
Herman Stutzer.

"I'm just so pleased they remembered her," Pait said. "She was a silent
power. I only hope it will inspire other Presbyterian women to dedicate their
lives to benefit others."

Nominations must be submitted by Jan. 15, 2006.

National Health Ministries provides ministry models, program resources,
health-awareness information and training to encourage, empower and support
individual Presbyterians, congregations and governing bodies in
health-related missions.
