American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 7/27/04)--National
Ministries' national coordinator for Indian Ministries, the Rev. Wilfred
Brown, was re-elected to his second two-year term as presiding elder of the
Council of Native American Ministries (CoNAM) at the group's spring meeting
in April.

A nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization, CoNAM's membership includes up
to three representatives from each of 12 major religious denominations that
sponsor an office or program relating to Native Americans or Alaska Natives
within North America. 

"Rev. Brown's leadership in this key ecumenical organization helps strengthen
ministries within Native American communities throughout the United States in
and through a number of communions," said the Rev. Dr. Cheryl F. Dudley,
National Ministries' associate executive director for Church in Community
Transformation. 

CoNAM works to maintain inter-denominational ties for mutual support and
seeks to empower the 4.1 million Native Americans in North America through
leadership development, Christian education, evangelism, advocacy, church
renewal, information and networking and more. Also, the group, which holds
biannual meetings in spring and fall, enables the development of culturally
sensitive Native American resources.

"The CoNAM collaboration bolsters strategies for strengthening discipleship,
justice making and other areas of ministry in ways that far outweigh the
efforts of any solo denominational program ministry," Dudley said. "We are
glad to have Rev. Brown providing leadership in this effort."
