Lockbox transition extended

Donations sent to old address will be forwarded only until year-end

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Presbyterian Church (USA) treasury officials have negotiated a
bank extension until the end of the year that will prevent donations sent to
the church's previous "lockbox" from being "returned to sender."

Beginning June 1 of this year, a switch in banks meant that the
PC(USA) moved its "lockbox" operation - which provides a faster and more
secure cash-receipt system for the church and its donors - from Louisville to
Pittsburgh.

But too many Presbyterians continue to use envelopes with the old
address on them, which threatens a flurry of "return to sender" mail being
sent back to donors by the church's previous lockbox vendor, National City
Bank.

"We want people's gifts," Mission Support Services (MSS) director
Joey Bailey told the Presbyterian News Service. "There's nothing worse than
sending in a contribution and then having it returned by the bank as
'undeliverable.' "

So Bailey is pleading with Presbyterian donors to "throw away those
old envelopes you've been hanging on to. After December National City won't
forward them."

The PC(USA) has used a lockbox for receipts since 1988, just after
the national offices moved to Louisville. MSS receives daily notices of funds
deposited into PC(USA) accounts and copies of all checks for recording
purposes.

Bailey said the new lockbox provider - PNC Bank - "has established a
strategic collection location where all donations and payments will be sent.
It will accelerate funds' availability for mission, minimize administrative
costs, and allow us to provide more information regarding donor wishes to our
program staff."

There a number of lockbox addresses in Pittsburgh, depending on the
type of donation.

The two key lockbox addresses are those for general individual
contributions to the General Assembly and for remittances from synods and
presbyteries to GA accounts.

The individual contributions address: Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),
Individual Remittance Processing, P.O. Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700.

The address to which synods and presbyteries should remit payments:
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Presbytery/Synod Remittance Processing, P.O.
Box 643751, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3751.

A complete list of lockbox addresses is available on the Web site
www.pcusa.org/financials/lockbox.htm. For more information contact Steve
Sexton, manager of Central Receiving, at (888) 728-7228, ext. 5571.

"We know Presbyterians hate to be wasteful," Bailey said. "but,
please, please, throw away those old envelopes!"
