Taiwan Church News 2748, 25 to 31 October 2004
Reported by Li Hsin-ren. Translated and Rewritten by David Alexander

The earthquake that struck Japan on 23rd October caused many deaths and
compounded losses that had accumulated over Japan's worst Typhoon season in
two decades. The Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT), which has had a long
and
close relationship with the United Church of Christ in Japan (Kyodan),
immediately dispatched US$10,000 in aid and asked its 1,200 congregations to
take special offerings so that more can be sent.

PCT moderator Chen Dao-hsiung and Associ4cate General Secretary Lim
Chong-cheng had been prepared to visit Japan on October 25th to take part in
the Kyodan's annual meeting, but Typhoon Nock-ten, stirring across the ocean
between Taiwan and Japan that day, resulted in a flight cancellation. The
visit was delegated to PCT clergy already resident in Japan. Later that day
Mr. Lim telephoned Kyodan leaders expressing the concern of the PCT's concern
and announcing the offering.

Taiwan itself suffered from Typhoon Nock-ten over the weekend.	On Monday
morning the PCT appointed a task force under the direction of Mr. Lim and two
Aboriginal church officers to receive reports of the storm's effect. PCT
General Secretary William J. K. Lo, on short-term study leave in North
America, also phoned back to inquire of responses and urge his staff to
manage
things.
