ABCUSA: Biennial Award Recipients Announced

American Baptist News Service (Green Lake, Wis. 11/20/04)--The Board of
National Ministries, meeting in semiannual meetings here, has announced the
names of the American Baptists who will receive national recognition for
excellence in ministry and service during the 2005 American Baptist Biennial
Meeting in Denver, Colo. The following recipients were chosen by the board
from nominations submitted by American Baptist clergy and laity:
       
* Edwin T. Dahlberg Peace Award - to the Honorable Charles Z. Smith of
Seattle First Baptist Church, Seattle, Wash.
* Jitsuo Morikawa Evangelism Award - to Lois Hill, member of First Baptist
Church, Winnebago, Minn.
* Edward H. Rhoades Urban Ministry Award - to the Rev. Dr. Arlee Griffin Jr.,
pastor of Berean Baptist Church, Brooklyn, N.Y.
* Rosa O. Hall Town and Country Award - to the Rev. Marvin L. Sallee, pastor
of Vinton Baptist Church, Vinton, Ohio.
* Kenneth L. Cober Award for Christian education at the regional level - to
the Rev. James P. Amend, pastor of Southside United Protestant Church,
Richland, Wash.
* Richard Hoiland Award for educational programs in the local church or wider
community - to the Rev. Dr. Alberto Martinez, pastor of Iglesia Bautista El
Buen Pastor, Toledo, Ohio.
* Luther Wesley Smith Award for educational programs in college or seminary -
to the Rev. Dr. James Chuck, professor at the American Baptist Seminary of
the West, Berkeley, Calif.
* Newton C. Fetter Award for campus ministry to the Rev. Gerald Losh,
director of Campus Ministries for the West Virginia Baptist Convention and
campus minister at Marshall University, Huntington, W.V.
* New Life Award - to James Carpenter, chair of the Board of Deacons, First
Baptist Church, Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Board of National Ministries voted to affirm the following 2005 Biennial
Award nominations from the American Baptist Committee on Chaplains and
Pastoral Counselors:

* Military Chaplain Merit Award - to Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) Thomas P.
Azar, United States Air Force, Headquarters Air Force Special Operations
Command, Hurlburt Field, Fla.
* Institutional Chaplain Merit Award - to Chaplain Mang Tiak, chaplain at The
Methodist Hospital, Houston, Tex.
* Pastoral Counselor Merit Award - to the Rev. Scott P. Kavanagh, pastoral
counselor at the Counseling Center, First Baptist Church, Jamesville, N.Y.
