American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 12/30/04)--Responding
Dec. 27 to the tragic series of earthquake-spawned tsunamis that now has
claimed at least 114,000 lives in Indian Ocean nations, American Baptist
Churches USA General Secretary the Rev. Dr. A. Roy Medley has expressed
"profound concern for victims of this monumental human tragedy" and
called on Americans Baptists "to pray for all those who have been
impacted by this catastrophe--and those who will continue to be
devastated by it."

The tsunamis were triggered by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake--the strongest
in 40 years--that swept across the Indian Ocean on Sunday, killing,
injuring or leaving homeless many tens of thousands from Thailand to
Somalia.

"In addition to their prayers," Medley said, "American Baptists can
support what certainly will be extensive and long-tern emergency relief
efforts through One Great Hour of Sharing." Contributions for those
efforts should be sent through normal channels, and be noted on the
Monthly Report of Mission Giving" marked "OGHS--Asian Tsunami Tragedy."
