The WCC is preparing an ecumenical event on water on 21 March in the
Ecumenical Center, Geneva. Water is central to life, and presentations at
this event will promote the call to provide access to clean drinking water
for every human being. The ecumenical event is to take place just after
the 17-20 March 2005 2nd Alternative World Water Forum in Geneva. The
Forum goal is to develop public policy that will finally provide access to
clean water for everyone and ensure that water is managed in a democratic
and sustainable way.

Rev Dr Samuel Kobia will visit WCC member churches in Bangladesh and

> Decade to Overcome Violence Asia focus launch
> 31 March - 6 April
> Chiang Mai, Thailand

"Building Communities of Peace for All" is the theme of the WCC Decade to
Overcome Violence 2005 focus on Asia. The annual focus will be launched at
the 12th general assembly of the Christian Conference of Asia (31 March -
6 April). Facing various forms of violence, the question of reconciliation
and peace is a crucial one in the vast and plural continent of Asia. The
DOV mid-term focus will celebrate peace-building efforts undertaken in
Asia, but also focus on the churches' contribution to violence. An
ecumenical women's forum is scheduled before the assembly.

The World Council of Churches is a fellowship of churches, now 342, in
more than 120 countries in all continents from virtually all Christian
traditions. The Roman Catholic Church is not a member church but works
cooperatively with the WCC. The highest governing body is the assembly,
which meets approximately every seven years. The WCC was formally
inaugurated in 1948 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Its staff is headed by
general secretary Samuel Kobia from the Methodist church in Kenya.
