FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AACC to Hold Press Conference on Uprootedness in Africa

In conjunction with a conference on Uprootedness and Governance, the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) and the World Council of Churches (WCC) will be holding a Press Conference on issues facing refugees in Africa and around the Globe at the AACC Headquarters Guest House in Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 1:15 PM.

Mr. Polycarp Ochillo, Programme Executive for the Governance, Ethics, and Morality Programmes at the AACC, will address the press on the issues arising out of this weeklong conference, including:

The links between refugees in Africa and poor governance in many African countries
The continuous erosion of resources in the global effort to deal with uprooted and internally displaced people.
The Increasing level of intolerance for refugees in Africa among certain communities and governments and the ethical and moral questions such intolerance raises in the church and secular communities
The need for African governments and the International community to provide legal protection for Asylum seekers abroad and refugees within Africa.

In working together on these issues, the AACC and WCC hope to place the concerns of refugees in Africa on the world agenda, particularly focusing on the Blair Commission s initiative on African development.

Participants in the conference are drawn from individuals based in Central, West, Southern, and East Africa, as well as those based in Geneva with the WCC, and include eminent scholars from Kenya and across the continent, such as George Okoth-Oboo, the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees Representative to Kenya.

Members of the press are also invited to attend sessions of this Conference. The Schedule of events is available by contacting the Communication and Advocacy Office of the AACC.

If you have any other questions, please Contact Brandon Gilvin or Lucy Ogot at the Communication and Advocacy Office of the AACC.
