Longtime SFTS professor Ted Stein dies at 84

LOUISVILLE ? The Rev. Edward V. "Ted" Stein, the Tully Professor of Pastoral
Psychology (emeritus) at San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS), died on
April 29 in San Rafael, CA, near the SFTS campus. He was 84.

	A native of Bellflower, CA, Stein taught at the seminary and at the
Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley ? where he was a founding faculty
member ? for 28 years before his retirement in 1987. His students included
this reporter.

	Stein, a disciple of Carl G. Jung, graduated from the University of
California at Los Angeles and Princeton Theological Seminary. He earned is
Ph.D. from the University of Southern California and did advanced doctoral
studies at the CG Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. 

	Before teaching, he was organizing pastor of College Park
Presbyterian Church in San Diego from 1948 to 1953, then the Presbyterian
campus minister at the University of California at Berkeley from 1953 to
1959.

	Well known in the fields of psychology and religion, Stein authored
several books and countless scholarly articles. He also was a co-founder of
the Lloyd Center Pastoral Counseling Service in San Anselmo and of the Marin
(County) Violence Prevention Forum. In 1965 he participated in the civil
rights march to Selma, AL, with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

	Stein is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth; four children ?
Karl, Larry, Laurel and Paula; and five grandchildren.

	A memorial service is scheduled for May 14 at First Presbyterian
Church in San Rafael.
