Presbyteries cited for generous mission giving

Donegal, Philadelphia and Santa Fe top GA contribution lists

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE ? Donegal Presbytery in Pennsylvania led all 173 Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) presbyteries in giving for the General Assembly mission
budget in 2004.

In a list compiled by the Mission Support Services office here,
Donegal led all presbyteries in total and per-member giving for "basic
mission support" ? the portion of the denomination's $125.1 million mission
budget that comes from congregations. Basic mission support accounts for
about 16 percent of the total mission budget.

Philadelphia Presbytery led in total mission giving, while Santa Fe
Presbytery led in total per-member giving.

During its spring meeting here, the General Assembly Council voted to
honor a number of presbyteries for "leadership in giving" in various
categories.

For "other specific appeals" ? which includes Extra Commitment
Opportunities, disaster assistance and the Theological Education Fund ?
Pittsburgh Presbytery was honored for total contributions and Nevada
Presbytery for per-member giving. Giving in that category by all presbyteries
was $16.2 million, or 13 percent of the mission budget.

In giving to the four churchwide special offerings ? the Christmas
Joy Offering, the One Great Hour of Sharing, the Pentecost Offering and the
Peacemaking Offering ? National Capital Presbytery led the way in total
dollars, while Alaska Presbytery was tops in per-member giving. Overall,
Presbyterians gave $16.8 million to the four offerings, or 13 percent of the
mission budget.

Pittsburgh Presbytery also led the way in mission giving through
Presbyterian Women (PW), while South Dakota Presbytery gave the most
per-member through PW.

The top 10 presbyteries (in order) in total dollars in basic mission
support were Donegal, Philadelphia, Greater Atlanta, Cascades, Chicago, Lake
Michigan, Grace, Los Ranchos, Mission and Carlisle.

The top 10 in per-member giving for basic mission support were
Donegal, Carlisle, Southeast Illinois, Lake Michigan, Elizabeth, Santa Fe,
New Castle, Redwoods, Des Moines and Palisades.
