Notes about people

by Jerry L. Van Marter

Ernest "Camp" Edwards, 72, who for more than three decades was a
servant and role model for young people in Louisville's toughest
neighborhoods, died on May 17, just five days after being honored as one of
the city's best and brightest neighborhood leaders.

A native of Louisville, Edwards was nurtured as a child by staff of
the Presbyterian Community Center (PCC), one of the oldest organizations of
its kind in the country. After a stint in the U.S. Army, he graduated from
Bellarmine College in Louisville, and, with financial assistance from the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), earned a master's degree in social work from
the University of Louisville in 1969.

Throughout his career, Edwards maintained his connection to the PCC,
as a part-time counselor, director of neighborhood services, social worker,
board member and interim executive director. He also worked in several county
youth programs, taught at a local community college, founded a number of
neighborhood organizations, and at the time of his death was director of
community outreach for Just Solutions, a local mediation service. He was
inducted into the PCC Hall of Fame on May 12.

Edwards, a member of Grace Hope Presbyterian Church in Louisville,
also served for a time on the staff of Mid-Kentucky Presbytery.
A funeral service has been set for May 23 at Louisville Presbyterian
Theological Seminary.
