by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE ? Nine Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregations, plus
church-related Hastings College in Nebraska and the denomination's Theology
and Worship office in Louisville, have been awarded worship-renewal grants by
the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship (CICW) in Grand Rapids, MI.

The institute, founded in 1997, is funded by the Lilly Endowment, of
Indianapolis. In cooperation with Calvin College, CICW "aims to promote the
scholarly study of the theology, history, and practice of Christian worship
and the renewal of worship in worshiping communities across North America and
beyond."

The grant recipients for 2005 include congregations, schools and
other religious entities representing 20 denominations in the United States
and Canada. They were chosen from among more than 150 applicants from 36
denominations, 38 states and four Canadian provinces. In all, more than
$700,000 was awarded.

The next application deadline for CICW worship-renewal grants is Jan.
10, 2006. For more information, visit the organization's Web site.

The PC(USA) recipients:

Church of the Redeemer, Presbyterian Church(USA), Los Angeles, will
collaborate with eight local churches in sharing innovative and creative ways
of providing vibrant, culturally relevant and multi-generational worship
experiences in small and mid-size traditional churches, emphasizing children
and youth, young adults, leadership development, sacred music and the arts.

Eliot Presbyterian Church, Lowell, MA, will develop liturgy and
multicultural worship practices to demonstrate the congregation's unity in a
diverse community through language, dance, media, visual art, music,
attitude, understanding, practice, leadership and congregational
participation.

First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, Berkeley, CA, will create new
and engaging habits of worship through the study of the visual arts in
worship, with an emphasis on Communion, Baptism and the unity of believers.

First United Presbyterian Church of San Francisco will train Asian
and Anglo Americans of all ages to plan, lead and participate in a newly
established multicultural, multigenerational worship service, through
discussion groups, liturgical art, retreats, and a conference.

Grandview Park Presbyterian Church, Kansas City, KS, will develop a
deeper understanding of the theology and practice of worship, educate and
train worship leaders from the church's diverse membership, and explore ways
in which art can enhance the multicultural worship experience in an urban
setting.

Hastings College Chapel, PC(USA), Hastings, NE, will explore the
shifting cultural contexts of worship and identify a theology of worship
rooted in the past and open to the future, through a yearlong consultation
with student leaders of the Hastings College Chapel and local pastors,
musicians, and lay leaders.

Jan Hus Presbyterian Church, New York City, will study hospitality as
a model for worship and missions, hosting workshops and Bible studies with
members of the three congregations that use the same sanctuary: Jan Hus,
Indonesian Presbyterian Church and St. John's Independent Catholic Community.

John Calvin Presbyterian Church, Salisbury, NC, will offer
lectionary-based activities to enable participants of all ages and abilities
to discover their gifts and employ them in worship services in an urban

North Carolina and Texas addressing the processes and principles involved in
developing and leading multisensory worship.

consultations to identify and strengthen pilot churches connecting
sacramental practices with mission and service commitments.
