Mary Holmes property for sale

PC(USA) seeking proposals for future use of 200-acre campus

by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE - The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is soliciting written proposals
for use of the buildings and grounds of the former Mary Holmes College in
West Point, MS.

The nearly 200-acre campus northeastern Mississippi has 23 buildings,
some in poor condition, including a gymnasium, library and chapel.

The deadline for proposals is June 10. Church officials said they
hope to make a decision by September.

The defunct PC(USA)-related college, which had a long tradition of
educating African-American students, officially closed in March after years
of struggling with financial problems.

The PC(USA), which owns most of the campus, assumed control of the
property in February. The school's trustees voted in April 2004 to file for
bankruptcy protection.

The church would prefer that the property be used for education of
racial minorities or disadvantaged communities, said the Rev. Curtis Kearns,
director of the PC(USA)'s National Ministries Division, which oversees the
office of racial-ethnic schools and colleges.

The church would like to sell the property as a single parcel, but
would consider selling in it sections or negotiating a long-term lease,
Kearns said.
